Swedish defenseman Alexander Edler has been suspended for the remainder of the 2013 World Hockey Championship.

The International Ice Hockey Federation independent disciplinary panel made the announcement on Friday, one day after Edler delivered a knee-on-knee hit to Canada captain Eric Staal.

Edler collided with Staal late in the first period of Sweden's 3-2 shootout win in the tournament's quarterfinal round. Staal was in obvious discomfort, holding his right knee.

The hit earned Edler a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct.

The disciplinary panel viewed the incident as "reckless, dangerous and that it was in disregard to the vulnerability of his opponent and for that he must be held accountable."

Sweden is set to face Finland in the semifinals on Saturday. A victory sends the Swedes to Sunday's gold-medal game. The other semifinal pits Switzerland against the United States.
