Stars Jose Reyes and Yoenis Cespedes went on the disabled list Saturday after getting hurt while sliding, and the Miami Marlins said slugger Giancarlo Stanton hopes to a avoid a trip to the DL.
Toronto said Reyes, its All-Star shortstop, likely will be sidelined until the All-Star break because of a severely sprained left ankle.
Reyes was injured during an awkward slide into second base during Friday night's 8-4 win over the Kansas City Royals.
"It is frustrating. I love baseball so much," Reyes said. "I love to be with my teammates on the field and helping my ballclub. Now I know I'm not going to be there for a little while. It's kind of disappointing for me. I've been through some injuries in my career. I don't like that. Injuries are part of the game and I have to deal with it."
Reyes, a four-time All-Star, was carted off the field Friday and placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday.
"A MRI came back, no fracture, but it's a severe sprain," Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "Right now, it looks like it will be three months, and that's just getting to the point that he's back in a big league game. It could be six to eight week of rest and rehab."
Acquired from Miami during the offseason after one year with the Marlins, Reyes is hitting .395 and led the major leagues with five stolen bases.
Cespdes, Oakland's left fielder, strained a muscle in his left hand after he landed awkwardly in a tumbling slide Friday night.
Cespedes had an MRI that showed no structural damage, and Athletics manager Bob Melvin says no surgery will be needed. He hopes Cespedes will return after the minimum time on the DL.
"Hopefully that's the extent of it for him. We want to make sure he is 100 percent healthy when he comes back," Melvin said. "We're not looking at surgery, so in that regard we're fortunate."
Cespedes strained a different muscle in the same hand last year. He was batting .200 with three home runs and seven RBIs playing in the first 11 games of the season. As a rookie last season, the Cuban defector batted .292 with 23 home runs and 82 RBIs in 129 games, finishing runner-up to the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout for AL Rookie of the Year.
Stanton also had an MRI Saturday, and it showed a bruised left shoulder that caused him to miss his second straight game for the Marlins, who began the day a big league-worst 1-9.
Stanton is hitting .167 without an RBI. He thinks he was hurt trying for a diving catch in the fourth inning of a game April 6 game at the New York Mets.
"It's the best possible news," Miami manager Mike Redmond said. "Obviously, you have someone like him out and it's tough. The other guys just have to step up."
