The Atlanta Braves bulked up for their playoff run by acquiring left-handed pitcher Paul Maholm and outfielder Reed Johnson from the Chicago Cubs Monday night.

In return, the Cubs obtained right-handed pitchers Arodys Vizcaino and Jaye Chapman.

The Braves, who are currently in one of the two wild card spots and are challenging Washington for first in the NL East, made the deal prior to Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver trade deadline.

Maholm, 30, is 9-6 with a 3.74 ERA in 21 appearances (20 starts) with the Cubs this season. He signed a one-year deal with the Cubs on January 10, 2012. The Braves now hold a $6.5 million team option on the lefty for 2013.

Maholm has watched his market value increase in the last month. He's 5-0 over his last seven appearances (6 starts) and hasn't given up more than a run in any of those outings.

Johnson, 35, is batting .302 with three home runs and 16 RBI in 76 games this season. He signed a one-year deal with the Cubs on January 3, 2012.

Vizcaino, 21, made his big league debut with the Braves last season and went 1-1 with a 4.67 ERA in 17 relief outings. He had Tommy John surgery during spring training this year and will miss the 2012 campaign.

Chapman, 25, is 3-6 with seven saves and a 3.52 ERA in 40 relief appearances for Triple-A Gwinnett this season.
