Woods to play Frys.com Open in October

Orlando, FL – Tiger Woods announced on his website Monday 9 at CordeValle Golf Club.

That will be his first appearance on the PGA Tour since the PGA Championship. Woods did not qualify for the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup and stated after the missed cut at Atlanta Athletic Club that he was considering adding a Fall Series event to his schedule.

"John Fry and his company have supported the tour, and I've heard good things about the event and the golf course," Woods said on his website. "One of my goals this year was to participate in a tournament I hadn't played before, and now, I will."

Woods traditionally didn't play in Fall Series events after the playoffs, but he is this season. Due to a leg injury at the Masters, Woods missed three months of action and the Frys.com Open would be his ninth start of the season.

Prior to Monday's announcement, Woods was only scheduled for the Australian Open later in the year.

American Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples said last week that he told Woods he'd be one of his captain's picks, but asked Woods to play a little more before the event, which is scheduled for Nov. 17-20. The Australian Open is the week before the Presidents Cup, which is at Royal Melbourne in Australia.

The Frys.com Open makes sense for Woods due its proximity to his alma mater, Stanford. CordeValle Golf Club is located in San Martin, Calif. and that's about 40 miles from Stanford's campus.

"I always enjoy competing in my home state, and this tournament fits my schedule perfectly," said Woods, who tied for fourth at the Masters. "I'm looking forward to seeing some old friends."

Rocco Mediate is the defending champion and the last major Woods won was the 2008 U.S. Open. He needed 91 holes before he finally dispatched Mediate for the title.

"Any time Rocco is in the field, it's always fun," Woods said.
