President Trump on Tuesday fired back at Hillary Clinton in a series of tweets after the former Democratic presidential candidate blamed FBI Director James Comey and Russian interference for ruining her chances at becoming president.

“FBI Director Comey was the best thing that ever happened to Hillary Clinton in that he gave her a free pass for many bad deeds,” Trump tweeted. “The phony Trump/Russia story was an excuse used by the Democrats as justification for losing the election. Perhaps Trump just ran a great campaign?”

Earlier Tuesday, Clinton attended the Women for Women International Conference and specifically cited the letter from Comey late in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Comey said that agents were looking into possible new information into Clinton's homebrew computer server. She was never charged with a crime, and Comey cleared Clinton on the Sunday before the election.

The theory that Comey swayed the election is certainly not new.

John Podesta, the former chairman of Clinton’s presidential campaign, said in February that "forces within the FBI" may have wanted her to lose.

“There are at least forces within the FBI that wanted her to lose,” Podesta said during an interview with the website NewCo, Politico reported. “I’m not sure they really understood the alternative, but they wanted her to lose. I think that’s one possibility.”

Clinton mentioned WikiLeaks, the antisecrecy website which some analysts believe to be connected to Russia and which posted the hacked Podesta emails.

“If the election were on October 27, I’d be your president," she said.

Clinton took a jab at Trump, saying the president should worry less about the election “and my winning the popular vote.”
