Alabama lawmakers will meet Tuesday to discuss the possible impeachment of Gov. Robert Bentley over an alleged affair with a former political aide.

Bentley, a Republican, admitted last year that he made inappropriate remarks to his former confidante and adviser Rebekah Caldwell Mason, but denied having an affair with her.

Mason resigned from her post last March.

Bentley was also accused of misusing state property and violating campaign finance rules, AL.com reported. He has denied those charges.

Committee Chairman Rep. Mike Jones, R-Andalusia, said he plans on continuing the investigation as soon as he gets clearance from current Attorney General Steve Marshall.

The Alabama House Judiciary Committee will examine a procedural inquiry concerning the impeachment investigation. The Senate will hold the trial should the House vote to impeach Bentley, the newspaper reported.
