San Antonio’s new $97,700 toilet is overflowing already, fiscally speaking.
Hailed by Councilman Roberto Trevino as cost-effective relief for downtown visitors, the advertised price for the prefabricated “Portland Loo” did not include installation. Oops!
Subsequent news reports estimated the start-up costs at “$30,000 to $60,000.” Watchdog.org projected higher expenses.
On Friday, through a public-records inquiry, Watchdog learned that the city expended an additional $93,680 to hook up the single-seat restroom on a sidewalk at Alamo and Commerce streets.
That work brings the total tab to $191,380 — nearly double Trevino’s announced price.
