Texas Congressman Ted Poe announced Wednesday that he's been diagnosed with cancer.

The conservative Republican from Houston said he had been diagnosed with leukemia. Poe, 67, said he's being treated at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Poe is looking toward a full recovery and plans to continue in Congress, the statement said. Poe said he plans to spend time in Texas during the congressional recess and focus on his health.

"It is my intention to beat cancer and have a full recovery and continue to represent the people of Texas," the statement said. "Thank you in advance for your thoughts and your prayers. The Good Lord will fix this."

The conservative former prosecutor and ex-judge represents District 2. Poe has served in the U.S. House since 2005.
