Krauthammer: Questions about Benghazi “ran out the clock”

Charles Krauthammer told viewers Wednesday on “Special Report with Bret Baier”that renewed calls for a special select committee to investigate the September 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya were “late, too late."

"This should have happened a year ago, year, three, four months ago," Krauthammer said. "Politically speaking, the administration has won. They ran out the clock.”

On Wednesday, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told reporters “we will never stop demanding answers and accountability when our national security is at stake and we owe that to the families of those brave American citizens who were murdered.”

McCain along with Sens. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., would like to see the establishment of a special select committee to investigate the attack, arguing that the recent testimony of former acting CIA Director Michael Morell was inaccurate and misleading.

Krauthammer, a syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor, indicated that while significant questions remained, the time for a special committee had passed. “If we had had a select committee from the beginning, really had coherent hearings, unlike what we’ve had,which were disjointed hearings that let all things sort of slip away, we really would have been somewhere, we would have gotten to the bottom of this," he said. "But, as a political fact, this thing is done.”

But Krauthammer also noted a focus away from Benghazi would draw more attention to other, more pressing, administration foreign policy failures. “I think right now the best thing for Republicans to do is to look at the broader foreign policy of this administration, to look at the Kerry hearings from yesterday, it is a disaster from one part of the globe to another,” Krauthammer said.

“Just about everybody agrees, except the most hardened and partisan Democrats, and that’s where you want to hit the administration. Not only for political, partisan reasons, but for the good of the country, this is really hurting the country, and unfortunately, you only have a certain amount of time, a certain amount of attention, and the clock has run out on Benghazi.

"I think you have to go after Syria, the Iran negotiations, the Crimea, Ukraine, what’s happening in Eastern Europe. I mean, this really is a collapse of America’s stature in the world.”
