The Utah prairie dog was labeled "endangered" under federal law in 1973. By  1984, the species was upgraded to "threatened" status under the federal Endangered Species Act.  Fast forward to 2012 where many in the state regard them as dangerous pests whose holes in the ground pose safety risks.  Utah's congressional delegation is now supporting legislation to allow for the extermination of the critters. Should Utah towns be allowed to exterminate prairie dogs, despite their protected status?
