After a paternity test done on a wealthy landowner from Spain showed that the married – but childless – man had fathered a baby girl with a maid, the daughter has been awarded more than $3 million in inheritance funds.

The DNA test was performed on the corpse of the 19th-century man.

Carmen Gordo, who is 69, was living on a monthly widow pension of about $500 before getting the good news. Her father was the late Antonio Álvarez Villalón, who never officially acknowledged her, according to The Telegraph.

Gordo’s lawyer said that she demanded to get the inheritance, which her father had left to his niece, because she feels it is the right thing to do.

“The economic aspect is nice, but I don’t need the money,” Gordo said. “What satisfies me is knowing that he was my father."

Her mother had the affair with Alvarez Villalon, who was 25 years older than she, and who dumped her after learning she was expecting.

"At the time it would have brought public scandal," her lawyer said.

He noted that Gordo and her mother were provided housing, though she lived with grandparents at one point, when her mother found employment for another family.

"I had boyfriends who ran away when they learnt that I had no father,” said Gordo, who added that it was agonizing not knowing who her father was.

She heard rumors about her father being the rich landowner, but never brought it up with her mother.

Her mother confessed the identity of Gordo’s father when she was practically on her deathbed.

“'The only man I ever loved was your father', my mother said in the final days of her life,” Gordo was quoted as saying in the Telegraph.

She said that what was most important to her as far as the paternity test was the legal recognition. "This man was my father and this serves to encourage others like me in the same position,” she said.
