102-year-old woman gets to play with team she's supported for over 90 years

A 102-year-old fan was finally able to make one of her oldest dreams come true - of playing with the football team she has supported for 92 years. At the age of 11, the elderly woman, Maria Guadalupe, became a fan of Barcelona de Guayaquil - also known as Barcelona Sporting Club – which are a team based in the western Ecuadoran city of Guayaquil, when the club was first founded. When the club heard about the longest standing ‘Barcelonista’ fan, they decided to invite her to one of their training sessions. Images capturing of the reunion showed the small smiling woman kicking the ball back and forth with the players even as she supports herself with a walking aid. The happy centurion then gives Damian 'Kitu' Diaz, one of the stars of the squad, a warm hug. Barcelona was founded on May 1, 1925, and is the most successful team in Ecuador, having won the Ecuadorian Serie A title a record 14 times. It was also the first Ecuadorian club to make it to the Copa Libertadores final. The team were named after the hometown of their founder, Eutimio Perez, a Spanish immigrant who grew up in the Catalan city of Barcelona. (ends) (CEN)
