If you're a brown-eyed gal who's always envied deep blue peepers, you might be intrigued to hear of a surgical procedure that promises to swap a patient's existing eye color for another.

Called an iris implant, the operation actually sews hardened silicon onto a person's eyeball...yielding a brand new hue. What could go wrong, right?

At least, that’s what Anita Adams figured. Adams, born with one green eye and one brown eye, hopped a plane to Panama to have a fake iris implanted over her own, according to a recent story from The New York Times. Though the wild procedure isn’t technically banned in the U.S., most doctors strongly advise against it—as they should: Iris implants can cause inflammation, bleeding, eye pain, and vision loss.

Adams now suffers from glaucoma and cataracts, even after having the implants removed.

Here at Prevention, we’re all for color contact lenses…but we also think you should embrace your eyes, whatever their shade. Enhance your natural hue—no surgery required—with these tips:

Ditch the soft browns. “The darker your eyeliner, the more intense the definition,” says Jessica Liebeskind, a renowned makeup artist based in New York City. She suggests swapping your coffee brown eyeliner for one in espresso, charcoal, or black. Dark hues will add contrast to light eyes, making them pop. If you have brown eyes, dark liner will enhance lighter specks of brown for a dynamic look.

Makeup Secrets from the Pros

Use cream eyeliner. Sure, a pencil is an easy go-to. But it won’t enhance your eyes the way cream liner will. After applying your shadow, use a cream eyeliner brush to line your lids from corner to corner, then apply to the water line at the bottom, explains Liebeskind.

Choose the best mascara for you. After using an eyelash curler to make your eyes pop, apply a mascara that complements your eye color.
