One of my producers just told me about her recent trip to the doctor and I'm flabbergasted! She went to her internist to go over lab tests and after being rushed through the results she asked for clarification. Her doctor said "actually, I have to go," and told her to go on the Internet and look up the conditions she'd just been diagnosed with. She left the room and my producer sat there shocked and confused.

In my eyes this incident is unacceptable. As physicians we're responsible for being advocates for our patients' health. This doctor's lack of professionalism is embarrassing. I'm writing this blog as a message to patients so that you will know this is no way to be treated. I can't stress enough the importance of the patient/physician relationship. You MUST feel comfortable with your doctor and be informed about your health.

Here are some red flags that it may be time to "divorce" your doctor_

1. Your doctor rushes you through appointments.

2. Your doctor doesn't take the time to answer your questions and go over your concerns.

3. Your doctor is rude or condescending.

4. Your doctor lacks compassion and warmth.

5. Your doctor asks inappropriate personal questions.

6. It's clear the doctor isn't listening to you when you talk.

7. You are consistently kept waiting a considerable amount of time to see the doctor.

8. Scheduling an appointment takes too long.

9. Your doctor doesn't make himself/herself available over the phone or via email for additional questions.

10. The doctor doesn't refer you to the correct doctors when your issue falls outside of his/her expertise.

Remember you have rights as a patient and it's alright to "fire" your doctor if you aren't getting the treatment you deserve. My producer did just that and is in search of a new internist.
