A sinful lowfat dessert that's surprisingly simple to whip up? You heard that right.
When Emma Chapman’s own birthday approached in January, she decided to treat herself to homemade angel food cake–and the results amazed her.
“I’ve always thought of angel food cake as a spring treat,” explains the blogger behind A Beautiful Mess. “So perhaps it’s a little odd to be making it in the middle of winter. But, I actually think angel food cake could be the perfect January cake, as it’s fat free and many people are trying to eat healthier ... after the holidays.”
“Even though this is a fairly healthy cake (if that’s not a total oxymoron), it still feels very decadent and special,” Chapman says. “Perfect for a birthday.”
While angel food cakes may seem plain in comparison to cakes made with buttercream and healthy doses of chocolate, Chapman’s take is simply heavenly, adorned with French meringue and crowned with a ring of ripe strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.
