[SPOILER ALERT: The following article contains information about the most recent episode of "The Walking Dead."]

It’s not too surprising that "The Walking Dead" season 7 finale saw a major character killed off – but fans couldn’t help but feel sad at who had been given the chop.

For a while many have speculated that Sasha would die, and at the weekend it became a bloody reality.

Sonequa Martin-Green’s character was being held prisoner by Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and agreed to to work for his side. But as they headed off to Alexandria he bungled her into a coffin and used her as a way of bartering Rick’s group’s surrender.

And when Jadis (Pollyana McIntosh) and her followers reveal themselves to be traitors to Rick (Andrew Lincoln), all hope seems lost for him.

But none of them expect a zombie-fied Sasha to lunge out at Negan when he opens up the coffin. In a final act of sacrifice, Sasha took the poison pill that Eugene had given her.

Unfortunately, Negan is able to avoid being bitten by Sasha.

Sasha is the only one to meet an unfortunate end during the final episode of season 7, but also paid tribute to deceased characters Abraham and Glenn.

Earlier in the year Sonequa’s future in the hit AMC drama was brought into question after she was announced as the lead character in "Star Trek: Discovery."

She later broke her silence about speculation – but was still typically vague.
