Report: George Lopez ‘assisted’ Prince’s family with $20K gift after singer's death

George Lopez wanted to support the family of his late friend Prince in its time of need and mourning.

According to TMZ, the Mexican-American comedian – who was good friends with the late “Purple Rain” singer – gave Prince’s siblings a $20,000 gift to help with living and travel expenses while they figure out the singer’s estate.

At a private memorial service at Los Globos in Los Angeles on Saturday, Lopez confirmed to ET Online that he had indeed helped the family out, although he didn’t go into detail about the specifics.

“I assisted the brothers that were in need at that particular moment,” he said. Lopez added that the Thursday the pop star died unexpectedly at age 57, “wasn’t an easy day or weekend.”

Frank Wheaton, an attorney for Prince's family, told ET that 55-year-old Lopez “helped us out tremendously, and we’re extremely grateful.”

Lopez told the celebrity site that he was alone in Columbus, Ohio, when he heard about Prince's death, and that he leaned on Eddie Murphy’s brother, Charlie Murphy, in helping each other cope with his death.

“Thank God we have each other. We really kind of brought each other back up. It was tough news,” Lopez said.

Lopez – who also shared on social media several photos of Prince’s appearance on his former talk show, “Lopez Tonight” – revealed to ET that, when he first met the iconic singer, Prince didn't approve of his crass language.

“He thought I used inappropriate language too often, and he wanted to be my Bible teacher,” Lopez laughed. “I said, ‘OK, if Prince wants to give me Bible lessons, then I'll do it.”

However, Lopez got food poisoning before they could meet. "I thought it was the shrimp-stuffed jalapeños," the comedian told ET, but Prince thought otherwise.

“He thought it was the devil keeping us apart,” Lopez recalled Prince’s theory. “That devil, he couldn’t keep us apart. We had some great moments.”
