Women are taking center stage in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

The massive global hype of the J.J. Abrams film continues to build with three new female characters joining the franchise.

"I am a woman and I watch 'Star Wars' and I liked 'Star Wars' growing up and I always thought very highly of Princess Leia for example, who was a woman who spoke her mind and she was witty and she got things done," one of the film's stars, Lupita Nyong'o told FOX News.

"Game of Thrones" star Gwendolyn Christie expressed her excitement for her "Star Wars" character saying, "When I found out what this character was and what it was about that this is a character this is 'Star Wars' onscreen female villain that’s incredible."

The story picks up 30 years after 1983’s "Return of the Jedi."
