George Lopez to Donald Trump: ‘You’re fired! This Mexican is taking over’

That could be the punchline to one of the comedian's jokes, and it just might turn out to be true.  if reports that he could be taking over  are true.

According to the New York Post’s Page Six, the Mexican-American comedian and NBC are reportedly is talks of having him take over as host of the reality competition show “Celebrity Apprentice,” just weeks after the network severed ties with Trump over his comments about Mexican immigrants.

Representatives for Lopez – whose stand-up routines frequently take on race relations – are in the early stages of discussions with NBC, according to the gossip page.

“There have been initial conversations with George Lopez’s representatives, and, given Donald Trump’s crazy comments, George would be the perfect loud response to Trump,” a source told Page Six.

Another source said landing Lopez as Trump’s replacement might be “a smart move” by NBC and would bring greater diversity to the network.

Fox News Latino reached out to Lopez’s reps for comment.

Last month the network cut ties with the Republican presidential hopeful following comments he made about Mexico, saying the country was not sending its best people to the United States, but instead “rapists” and “drug traffickers.”

At the time, NBC said it would continue the "Apprentice" relationship because the show is licensed from Mark Burnett’s United Artists Media Group. Production for the 15th season of the show is scheduled for September.

Since his controversial remarks, Trump has remained unapologetic and will not stand down. In a recent interview with MSNBC, he brushed aside the scandal and said he’s confident he could win substantial Hispanic votes if he’s the party’s nominee.

“The Hispanics love me,” Trump said.
