The Parental Television Council is getting hot and bothered by We TV’s controversial show ‘Sex Box.’ The PTC has issued a national petition for the basic cable show’s cancellation before it debuts on February 27.

‘Sex Box’ was a successful British television series before Relativity Media brought it to the States. The concept is extreme – couples’ therapy based on a theory that couples are most receptive to counseling post-coital. Couples enter a sound-proof box without cameras inside, and have sex while a panel of three relationship experts waits outside. After the couple finishes, they engage in therapy.

PTC President Tim Winter told FOX411: “It’s a live sex show on television. This is the type of show you would see on Showtime or HBO, but it’s a basic cable package. We have seen historically, like a food chain, what starts on a premium network goes to basic cable and then goes to broadcast.”

Winter explained that broadcasting a show like ‘Sex Box’ will allow for even more explicit content on basic cable.

“By coming into 100 million cable subscribers home they immediately add toxicity to the entire environment,” Winter said. “If you have people inside the box having sex the next step is putting a camera in the box.”

The PTC’s petition’s effectiveness still remains to be seen.

“I hope we can stop it before the show airs and they realize that programming a show has consequences. We have had success in stopping other shows before like Oxygen’s “All My Babies Mamas,” said Winter. “Cable networks really feel it when advertisers start to leave. What we want is this network to be tossed off by the cable network.”

FOX411 reached out to We TV but did not receive comment regarding the PTC’s petition.

Upon the announcement of the show, We TV President Marc Juris issued a statement saying: “’Box’ is one of the most unique and compelling show concepts we’ve ever seen, and we can’t wait to bring it to WE TV.”
