In a new interview with Australian show "The Project," the pop-star goes into detail about the suicidal thoughts she referenced in the lyrics to her song "By The Grace of God." At one point in the song, Katy sings, “Couldn't take it anymore… I looked in the mirror and decided to stay / Wasn't gonna let love take me out that way.”
"Sometimes you can be blinded by your extreme emotions," explained Katy. "I definitely was looking for answers during that time I wrote that song. And yeah, I was depressed, and it was sad, and there were thoughts, but there were never actions, thankfully."
The 30-year-old star has confirmed that the emotional ballad is about her break-up with Brand. This interview echoes the same sentiment she shared in the September 2013 issue of Billboard.
"That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point...," she told the magazine. "I asked myself, 'Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?'"
As for why Perry wanted to share such an emotional track? Her hope was that the song would help others going through similar heart-ache. "I wanted to share that side of my story, because I know there are so many other people out there that have gone through things like that, and you always feel like you're the only one going through that."
Katy has seemingly bounced back from the difficult time.
She's reportedly dating Diplo and even sent her DJ-beau a cryptic birthday tweet today, adding a shrimp emoji to her short (but sweet) message. We're guessing the shrimp is a reference to his song "So Many Shrimp" - cute!
