A crew member for "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" has died on the New Orleans set of the film, TMZ reported Wednesday.

The fatal accident occurred Tuesday as the man was working to tear down the set and the high-powered lift he was operating tipped over, sources told the gossip website.

"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the [crew member's] family at this time," Paramount Pictures said in a statement.

"The safety of our cast and crew is our top priority and the studio is fully cooperating with all investigating agencies as they examine the circumstances surrounding this unusual accident," the statement added.

"G.I. Joe: Retaliation," starring Channing Tatum and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, is a sequel to the 2009 film "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra."

It hits theaters in June 2012.
