Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries' short-lived marriage was doomed before they even said "I do," according to TMZ sources who claim the former couple's prenup negotiations were marred by bitter showdowns.

The reality TV superstar and the NBA player sniped at each other during summer talks with their lawyers over how to divide their assets in the event of a marriage split, the website reported Thursday.

One of the major factors behind their bickering was how much of a cut Humphries, 26, would get from their wedding-generated earnings, with each complaining, sometimes bitterly, about the way the other was treating them.

"It was really apparent then ... this marriage wasn't going to last, and even they could see it wasn't a good idea," the unnamed source said.

Kardashian, 31, allegedly triumphed in her wish for their assets to remain separate, with Humphries receiving a limited cut of the money generated by their wedding.

Humphries is also reportedly asking for the $2 million engagement ring he gave to Kardashian back, friends of his told Life and Style magazine.

Kardashian is supposedly willing to hand over the rock to avoid a nasty legal battle, the New York Post reported, although she is under no obligation to give it up.

The couple, who met in October 2010, got engaged in May this year and married in August.

Their union lasted just 72 days, with Kardashian filing for divorce Monday on the grounds of "irreconcilable differences."

She later said in a message on her website that she married for love and it just did not "turn out to be the fairytale" she wanted.
