Pioneering actress Rita Moreno is back on TV Land's newest sitcom, “Happily Divorced,” which premieres Wednesday night at 10:30pm.
Moreno stars as Fran Drescher’s mother, a vivacious Jewish New Yorker named Dori. The actress says she can most certainly relate with her character.
“I come by that naturally,” Moreno says in an interview posted in TV Land’s website. “I lived in New York for a good part of my life.”
Drescher plays a woman who has been married for 18 years when her husband comes out of the closet, confessing that he is in fact gay.
Unfortunately, he’s too broke to move out and although they divorce, they continue living together.
The Puerto Rican actress explains where she got the inspiration to create Dori’s character and says she’s really enjoying the part.
“I based this on a lady who I knew,” Moreno says joyously. “I love doing it! Love playing with Fran because it is like play.”
Other actors joining the Emmy-, Oscar-, Grammy- and Tony Award-winner are Valente Rodríguez, John Michael Higgins and Tichina Arnold.
