CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela's public ministry has opened an investigation into a website over an article that President Hugo Chavez says appears aimed at inciting a coup.

A statement from prosecutors Tuesday says the probe will look into alleged "calls not to recognize" the nation's institutions made on Noticiero Digital.

On Sunday, Chavez read aloud from the Noticiero Digital article in which a columnist wrote that active and former military officers have been meeting to plan an "inevitable" transition in the county.

Chavez called for an urgent investigation.

Noticiero Digital, which takes an anti-Chavez line and has repeatedly been criticized by the president, posted a report on the investigation but did not immediately comment on it.
