JOHANNESBURG, (AP) — U.S. Vice President Joe Biden held an hour-long discussion with former South African president Thabo Mbeki at Mbeki's home in Johannesburg.

A Mbeki aide said the former president briefed Biden on his mediation efforts in Sudan. The aid spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Biden arrived Thursday. He will represent the United States at the opening ceremony of FIFA's World Cup tournament, which kicks off Friday. Saturday he will watch the U.S. soccer team play against England in Rustenburg.

Biden is accompanied by his wife, Jill, who on Thursday visited an HIV/AIDS orphanage, funded by USAID in Soweto, a Johannesburg neighborhood.
