UN wants timely results from Afghan government on economy, security, fighting corruption

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council says it looks forward to the Afghan government's "timely implementation" of its commitments to deliver economic growth, improve its security forces and tackle corruption.

The council issued a statement after a briefing Friday by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the international conference he co-chaired in Kabul on Afghanistan's future.

The council says it supports the transition to an "Afghan-led process which aims to accelerate Afghan leadership and ownership" in a country where international organization now play a sizable role.

At Tuesday's conference, over 60 countries endorsed President Hamid Karzai's plan for Afghan police and soldiers to take charge of security nationwide by 2014.
