Kenya police post reward for grenade attack information; politicians arrested for hate speech

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Kenyan police are offering a reward for information on a grenade attack at a political rally that killed six people.

Police commissioner Mathew Iteere said Tuesday he hopes the $6,250 reward will speed up the investigations into Sunday's grenade attack at a rally against a draft constitution.

Those at the rally oppose the draft constitution because it would allow abortions in life-threatening pregnancies and recognize Islamic courts. The draft will be voted on Aug. 4.

Iteere also says police arrested an assistant government minister and two members of parliament for hate speech while campaigning against the constitution.

Human rights groups say hate speech fueled Kenya's 2007-08 postelection violence that killed over 1,000 people.
