JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel's Army Radio has played parts of an interview given by Israel's most famous spy before he was captured and executed in Syria 45 years ago.

In the 1962 interview for Damascus Radio, Eli Cohen is in character as businessman Kamal Amin Thabit. He comments on Arab music and society. The sound quality in the excerpt broadcast Sunday was poor.

Cohen is revered in Israel as a highly talented spy who worked his way into the upper echelons of Syrian government and society, feeding Israel with valuable intelligence that he transferred via clandestine radio broadcasts.

Cohen was born in Egypt to Syrian Jewish parents. Since his execution in 1965, Israel has been trying unsuccessfully to persuade Syria to return his remains to Israel.
