IAEA Board to Vote on Syria Motion

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

A U.S.-led effort to bring Syria before the U.N. Security Council for failing to declare a covert nuclear reactor and refusing to give information to the International Atomic Energy Agency is to be put to a vote.

Ministers of the IAEA's 35 governing members are to decide Thursday on whether to report Damascus for failure to cooperate as part of a regular meeting.

The push comes amid a separate effort by European nations to have the Security Council condemn the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad for its deadly crackdown on protesters.

The IAEA has been frustrated in repeated attempts to follow up on evidence that Syria had nearly completed a nuclear reactor capable of producing plutonium, used to arm nuclear weapons. The site was destroyed by Israel in 2007.
