Hurricane Kate forms north of Bermuda

Hurricane Kate formed in the Atlantic Ocean north of Bermuda, becoming the fourth hurricane of the Atlantic season, the National Hurricane Center announced Wednesday.

The hurricane's maximum sustained winds early Wednesday were near 75 miles per hour.

Forecasters say it is not expected to hit the United States. Kate was centered about 260 miles north of Bermuda and was moving northeast near 40 mph.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says swells from Kate will begin affecting Bermuda on Wednesday morning, likely causing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
