German tenor Peter Hofmann dies at 66

German tenor Peter Hofmann has died after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 66.

Hofmann was famous for his performances at the annual Bayreuth festival, which celebrates the music of Richard Wagner. He toured stages around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and performed as the main character of the Phantom of the Opera musical in Hamburg.

The Rheinische Post newspaper reported that Hofmann died Tuesday at a hospital in Wunsiedel, adding that he had Parkinson's and dementia for several years and stopped performing in 2000.

Hofmann is survived by his wife and three children.
