PARIS (AP) — A judicial official says French police have detained a Rwandan doctor convicted in absentia in his homeland for a role in that country's 1994 genocide.

Eugene Rwamucyo was picked up Wednesday in Sannois, northwest of Paris, on an international warrant issued by Rwanda in 2007.

According to the official, who demanded anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, Rwamucyo was recognized by someone at a funeral who then informed police.

Rwamucyo was convicted in absentia in Rwanda in 2007 and sentenced to life in prison. He'd practiced in France's northern Nord region but was suspended last year. He lives in neighboring Belgium. He's among 9 Rwandans that France is investigating.

He will appear before a prosecutor Thursday.
