France intends to pass a law that would ban "psychological violence within the couple," The Agence France Presse reports.

The country reportedly plans to look into whether it would be beneficial to tag violent partners to prohibit them from stalking.

The prime minister announced the new efforts at the United Nations' tenth International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, according to the AFP

"It's an important step forward: the creation of this offence will allow us to deal with the most insidious situations, situations that leave no visible scars, but which leave their victims torn up inside," Prime Minister Francois Fillon told the AFP.

"And we are going to experiment with electronic surveillance measures on the Spanish model to monitor the effectiveness of restraining orders against a violent spouse."

In 2008, 157 women in France were murdered by their partners, according to the AFP.
