Brother of Al Qaeda No. 2 Rearrested in Egypt

CAIRO-- Mohammed al Zawahiri, brother of al Qaeda No. 2 Ayman al Zawahiri, was re-arrested in Egypt only days after he was freed under an amnesty for political prisoners, AFP reports.

Security officials did not immediately give a reason for his detention overnight.

Mohammed al Zawahiri had been in jail since 1999 after being transferred from the United Arab Emirates--where he was arrested--to Egypt.

He was one of dozens of political prisoners freed Thursday by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces after President Hosni Mubarak was forced from office on Feb. 11.

A death sentence was handed down against al Zawahiri by an Egyptian court in his absence in 1998 on charges of completing military training in Albania and "planning military operations" in Egypt.
