2 years after storybook rescue, teary reunion for Betancourt, other captives

Published November 17, 2014

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — An emotional Ingrid Betancourt shed a few tears as she celebrated with other former Colombian captives the second anniversary of her storybook rescue from leftist rebels.

The Franco-Colombian politician told reporters Friday that she remains "in a process of healing." She said it's a long process.

Betancourt now divides her time between New York and Paris and expects to soon publish her account of her more than six-year ordeal.

In an elaborate ruse, Colombia's military airlifted Betancourt to freedom in 2008 along with three U.S. military contractors and 11 Colombian soldiers and police.

Reporters pressed Betancourt on whether she will return to Colombian politics, but her response was vague. She said there different ways to aid one's country.
