The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to the family of Welles Crowther, the 24-year-old volunteer firefighter and equities trader who saved lives in the South Tower on September 11th. Known as the "man in the red bandana," Crowther guided trapped survivors to safety before losing his life. His mother Allison and sister Paige accept the nation's highest civilian honor on his behalf.
