U.S. Northern Command and NORAD are thinking outside the box to counter drone incursions over U.S. military bases. The 'Falcon Peak' project seeks to develop technology to protect the United States from the growing threat of drones used for surveillance, smuggling and attacks. Some systems disable hostile drones by shooting them with a net. Other systems pinpoint a drone's location using sound. USNORTHCOM reported over 350 unauthorized drone flights across more than 100 military installations in 2024. The project gives companies an opportunity to demonstrate their anti-drone technology in a realistic setting at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. There are over 1 million drones registered with the FAA in the United States—a number that is predicted to grow to 2.7 million by 2027.
