The timber industry has an opportunity to help firefighters and also boost production by taking in dead trees blown over by Hurricane Helene.
Trees blown over by Hurricane Helene last year are making harder for crews to fight wildfires this year. Most of the trees, which are not yet dry enough to be wildfire fuel, are in the way of bulldozers used to make paths to stop wildfires. The local timber industry has an opportunity to help firefighters and also boost production by taking in dead trees to be turned into mulch, construction materials and paper. "It's very important to get those dead timber out just to prevent the forest fires, plus can still make the natural resources out of that dead one," Johnny Evans, Evans Lumber Co. Owner, said. The effort supports President Trump’s executive order to boost domestic timber production by 25%.
