This week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reached a milestone in western North Carolina, removing 5 million cubic yards of debris. For perspective, that’s enough to fill the Panther’s Stadium four times, or cover Central Park with 5 feet of debris. Engineers tell FOX, Helene’s effect on the region caused challenges because of tough terrain and total breadth of the damage. “It’s this avalanche of soil and trees and rocks and homes, ya know all of that came down…and were deposited in the lakes,” says one USACOE geotechnical engineer. The USACOE in WNC show FOX what the debris process looks like, hoping to be finished midsummer.
