Tenn. school district metes out suspension in outdated meat controversy

An East Tennessee school district that served 6-year-old pork to students has suspended the child nutrition manager over the incident, it was reported Friday.

Manager Mandy Kenner was suspended three days without pay, WCYB-TV reported.

Hawkins County Director of Schools Steve Starnes announced the suspension at a school board meeting Thursday night, the station said.

At the meeting, angry parents confronted Starnes and demanded that steps be taken so that outdated meat is never served again at school cafeterias.

Cafeteria manager Linda Morie told parents at the meeting that she ate the pork and thought it tasted “good,” WCYB said.

“We do make mistakes and this was a mistake,” Morie said. “But give us a chance to straighten it out, and let us feed your kids.”

Pork roast that dated back to 2009 was served in April to students at 18 Hawkins County schools.

USDA guidelines state that uncooked meat should not be frozen for more than 12 months.
