Suspicious Powder Found on New Jersey Train

Published January 07, 2015

Police are checking a suspicious substance found on a New Jersey Transit train during Thursday's morning commute, but believe it was harmless.

Spokesman Dan Stessel says Train 3221 had left New York City for Long Branch at 7:01 a.m. Thursday.

Stessel says a powdery substance was spotted when the train reached Rahway about 40 minutes later.

Stessel says about 200 passengers were transferred to the next train. The spokesman says no one complained of any health problems.

NJ Transit's hazardous materials unit is analyzing the substance.

New York City police have responded this week to six reports of powder in envelops mailed to foreign missions to the United Nations.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
