Snapshot of a jury: Clairvoyant, Japanese cartoons shape Colorado theater shooting pool

The judge in the Aurora theater shooting trial hopes to have a jury seated by late April. Until then, attorneys from both sides are spending long days grilling jury prospects about their views on the death penalty, mental illness and their own personal problems.

The laborious process that started Jan. 20 has offered moments ranging from the mundane to the surreal. So far, more than 50 people have been asked to return after questioning. Hundreds more will be interviewed.

Those dismissed by the judge have included a self-described clairvoyant and a man who attributed his incoherent feelings about capital punishment to a Japanese cartoon show.

Judge Carlos A. Samour Jr. hopes to select 12 jurors and 12 alternates from a final pool of 120 people.
