An off-duty Houston police officer opened fire on three robbery suspects inside his home Thursday morning, killing one, The Houston Chronicle reported.

"They picked the wrong house," Thomas Gilliland, a spokesman from the Harris County Sheriff's Office, told the paper.

According to the report, the officer woke up at about 9:30 a.m. to the sound of breaking glass. Dressed in his underwear and armed with a gun, the unidentified officer confronted the three.

The men fled, but one reportedly turned and pointed a gun at the homeowner and he was struck in the hip by a single bullet. The suspect was hospitalized and died later. There was no immediate description for the suspects at large, but a gun was found at the scene.
