New York funeral home finds stab wound on woman, 82, believed to have died of natural causes

A New York funeral home discovered a stab wound on the body of an 82-year-old woman whose death was originally ruled a result of natural causes, prompting the medical examiner to investigate and rule her death a homicide on Monday, The New York Daily News reported.

Myrtle McKenny was reportedly found dead in her Brownsville, Brooklyn, home on Nov. 9, by a home health aide. Her family has always been suspicious of her cause of death. The paper reported that the family questioned how far the body was found under a table in the apartment.

A neighbor also told the paper that, days prior to the woman's death, he helped her take out $800 from the bank because she told him she feared someone was going to steal it from her.

Authorities have padlocked her apartment door and are reportedly investigating inside for evidence.

ABC-7 reported that a worker from Caribbean Funeral Services discovered a knife wound in the back of her neck. The city’s medical examiner’s office was notified and a pathologist confirmed the stab wound and found three broken ribs and bruising.

"The cause of death is stab wound of neck and incised wounds of right upper extremity with blunt impact injuries of head, torso and right upper extremity, with contributing condition of hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease," the medical examiner's office said in a statement obtained by the paper.
