Midair Plane Crash in Arizona Leaves at Least 1 Dead

Published January 07, 2015

DEVELOPING: Two small planes collided in midair south of Phoenix on Wednesday, killing at least one person and sending one of the aircraft plummeting to the ground, the FAA said.

The crash happened about 10 a.m. near a baseball field in the town of Coolidge, Ariz., according to police there.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says one person on board the single-engine Cessna 150 was killed when it crashed. A second person was airlifted to a hospital.

The pilot of a single-engine Piper Cherokee handed safely in a field about two miles from where the Cessna crashed. Neither the pilot nor a passenger was injured.

No one on the ground was hurt, either, according to Gregor.

One of the planes was reportedly registered to the Oxford Airline Training Center.

Inspectors with the FAA and National Transportation Safety board are on the way to the crash sites.
