Published November 17, 2014

LYNN, Mass. -- Police say a man is dead after he allegedly attacked a Lynn police officer, grabbed the officer's gun and then shot himself.

Lynn police Lt. Bill Sharpe said the officer was injured during the incident on Thursday in front of City Hall, but not seriously.

Sharpe said at about 10 a.m., a young male approached the officer from behind while he was on a detail and attacked him unprovoked. He said a nearby utility worker intervened and while the three struggled, the suspect got hold of the officer's gun and shot himself fatally.

Witness Lawrence Harvey told The Daily Item of Lynn that he heard two shots and later saw the officer being treated for a hand wound.
