Jury hears opening statements in Chandra Levy case

Prosecutors are acknowledging mistakes in their investigation into the death of Washington intern Chandra Levy, but say they now have the man who killed her nearly a decade ago.

A jury heard opening statements Monday in the murder trial of Ingmar Guandique (gwahn-DEE'-kay), from El Salvador. He is charged with the attempted sexual assault and murder of Levy in 2001.

The Washington intern's disappearance made headlines when she was romantically linked to Gary Condit, who at the time was a congressman from California. Condit was once a suspect but police no longer believe he had anything to do with Levy's death.

Prosecutors said police flubbed the investigation because they were mistakenly focused on Condit.

Defense attorneys said the evidence against Guandique is practically nonexistent.
