Correction officer suspended in connection with NY prison break

A correction officer was suspended Friday as part of the investigation into the escape of two inmates who broke out of a New York state prison and are still at large, officials said.

A statement by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said that due to the ongoing investigation, no more information was immediately available.

Richard Matt and David Sweat cut their way out of Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora on June 6. The pair have eluded a massive manhunt since then and authorities admitted Friday it’s “entirely possible” the search could take months.

Prison worker Joyce Mitchell is accused of giving the inmates hacksaw blades and other tools to cut through their cells and a steam pipe to get beyond the prison walls. Authorities say she planned to be the convicts’ getaway driver but backed out at the last second. Mitchell has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
