A 27-year-old California man died Tuesday when he crashed his car at the San Ysidro port of entry just south of San Diego while trying to enter the United States, the California Highway Patrol said.

Shortly after 2 pm, his grey Hyundai sedan was traveling "at a high rate of speed when it collided with a metal swing arm barricade."

Tijuana police said the driver also struck a 70-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman, who sustained moderate injuries, NBC 7 San Diego reports.

The San Ysidro port of entry is the busiest land port of entry in the Western Hemisphere, processing 70,000 northbound vehicles and 20,000 northbound pedestrians each day, though the pandemic has reduced those numbers.
